Joseph N. Lotito, the late founder of Salt City Center, in 1998.
Joseph Lotito, founder and executive director of Salt City Center for the Performing Arts, passed away Oct. 25 at age 82.
Acting-wise, Lotito was best known for his many performances as the world-weary papa Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, while his company mounted lavish Eastertime productions of Jesus Christ Superstar for several decades. And while Salt City Center lost its longtime home at the former Temple Adath Yeshurun on South Crouse Avenue in 2005, Lotito continued to mount productions at other locations such as Jazz Central. Lotito and his beloved wife Pat, a talented musician in her own right, received Lifetime Achievement honors during the first Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) awards ceremony, held in May 2004. A tribute to Lotito’s life in the theater will be published in an upcoming issue of the Syracuse New Times.
